551.3 The Package Manager</A>
56</H1>
57
58<P>
59Historically MacPython came with a number of useful extension packages
60included, because most Macintosh users do not have access to a development
61environment and C compiler. For Mac OS X that bundling is no longer done,
62but a new mechanism has been made available to allow easy access to
63extension packages.
64
65<P>
66The Python Package Manager helps you installing additional packages
67that enhance Python. It determines the exact MacOS version and Python
68version you have and uses that information to download a database that
69has packages that are tested and tried on that combination. In other
70words: if something is in your Package Manager window but does not work
71you are free to blame the database maintainer.
72
73<P>
74PackageManager then checks which of the packages you have installed and
75which ones are not. This should also work when you have installed packages
76outside of PackageManager. You can select packages and install them,
77and PackageManager will work out the requirements and install these too.
78
79<P>
80Often PackageManager will list a package in two flavors: binary and
81source. Binary should always work, source will only work if you have
82installed the Apple Developer Tools. PackageManager will warn you about
83this, and also about other external dependencies.
84
85<P>
86PackageManager is available as a separate application and also as a
87function of the IDE, through the File-&gt;Package Manager menu entry.
