41. Technical overview
5---------------------
6
7FreeBSD is a freely available, full source 4.3 (+4.4 enhancements) BSD
8release for Intel i386/i486 (or compatable) based PC's. It is based
9heavily on Bill Jolitz's 386BSD 0.1, with additions from "the patchkit",
10NetBSD, CSRG, and the Free Software Foundation.
11
12Many hundreds of bugs from the 386BSD 0.1 distribution were fixed,
13and many out-of-date pieces of software were upgraded to their current
14releases.
15
16Additionally, many packages such as XFree86 1.3, xview 3.2, elm, nntp,
17mh and dozens of other miscellaneous utilities have been ported and
18are now available as add-ons. See then next section of this document
19for more details.
20
21For a list of contributors, please see the file "CONTRIB.FreeBSD",
22which should be bundled with your distribution.
23
24The core of FreeBSD does not contain DES code which would inhibit its
25being exported outside the United States. There is an add-on package
26to the core distribution, for use only in the United States, that
27contains the programs that normally use DES. The auxilliary packages
28provided separately can be used by anyone.
29
302. Supported Configurations
31---------------------------
32
33FreeBSD currently runs on a wide variety of ISA and EISA bus based
34PC's, ranging from 386sx to 486 class machines (though the 386sx is
35not recommended). Support for generic IDE or ESDI drive configurations,
36various SCSI controller, network and serial cards is also provided.
37
38Following is a list of all currently known disk controllers and
39ethernet cards known to work with FreeBSD. Other configurations may
40very well work, and we have simply not received any indication of
41this.
42
43
442.1. Disk Controllers
45
46WD1003 (any generic IDE)
47
48Adaptec 1542{A,B,C} ISA SCSI controller.
49
50Adaptec 174x EISA SCSI controller in standard and enhanced mode.
51
52DTC 3290 EISA SCSI controller in emulation mode.
53
54Bustec 742A.
55
56Ultra Store 14F and 34F.
57
58With all supported SCSI controllers, full support is provided for
59SCSI-I & SCSI-II peripherals, including Disks, tape drives (including
60DAT) and CD ROM drives. Note: This is the only way a CD ROM drive
61may be currently attached to a FreeBSD system; we do not support
62SoundBlaster or "mini SCSI" CD ROM configurations.
63
64
652.2. Ethernet cards
66
67SMC Elite 16 WD8013 ethernet interface, and most other WD8003E,
68WD8003EBT, WD8003S, WD8003SBT and WD8013EBT based clones.
69
70Isolan AT 4141-0 (16 bit)
71
72Isolink 4110 (8 bit)
73
74Novell NE2000 ethernet interface.
75
763Com 3C503 Etherlink II
77
78
792.3. Misc
80
81Various 2 and 4 port serial/parallel cards.
82
83
84FreeBSD does NOT support IBM's microchannel (MCA) bus.
85
86
873. Obtaining FreeBSD.
88---------------------
89
90You may obtain FreeBSD in a variety of ways:
91
921. FTP/Mail
93
94You can ftp FreeBSD and any or all of its optional packages from
95`freebsd.cdrom.com' - the offical FreeBSD release site. By the time
96you read this, it may also be on one or more "mirror" sites somewhere
97else on the internet; check with archie for details.
98
99If you do not have access to the internet and electronic mail is your
100only recourse, then you may still fetch the files by sending mail to
101`ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com' - putting the keyword "help" in your message
102to get more information on how to fetch files from freebsd.cdrom.com.
103Note: This approach will end up sending many *tens of megabytes*
104through the mail, and should only be employed as an absolute LAST
105resort!
106
107
1082. CDROM
109
110FreeBSD may be ordered on CDROM from Walnut Creek CDROM, Suite 260, 1547
111Palos Verdes, Walnut Creek CA 94596. 1-800-786-9907, +1-510-674-0783,
112+1-510-674-0821 (fax), or from orders@cdrom.com. Our current email catalog
113is wcarchive.cdrom.com:/cdrom/catalog.
114
115Cost is $39.95. Shipping (per order not per disc) is $5 in the US, Canada,
116or Mexico and $10.00 overseas. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American
117Express, and ship COD to the United States. California residents please
118add 8.25% sales tax.
119
120Should you be dissatisfied for any reason, the CD comes with an
121unconditional return policy.

145 U.S. bank accepted for payment.
146
147
148It should be noted, lest you get the wrong impression that "FreeBSD"
149is anything but, that almost no one in the "core team" makes money
150from distributions or anything else connected with FreeBSD. We simply
151provide this information as a public service for those wishing to get
152their releases from somewhere other than the net (and the easier it
153is for you to obtain our software, the happier we are).
154
155
1564. Reporting problems, making suggestions, submitting code.
157-----------------------------------------------------------
158
159Your suggestions, bug reports and contributions of code are always
160valued - please do not hesitate to report any problems you may find
161(preferably with a fix attached if you can!).
162
163The prefered method to submit bug reports from a machine with internet
164mail connectivity is to use the sendbug command. Bug reports will be
165dutifully filed by our faithful bugfiler program and you can be sure
166that we'll do our best to respond to all reported bugs as soon as
167possible.
168
169If, for some reason, you are unable to use the sendbug command to
170submit a bug report, you can try to send it to:
171
172 FreeBSD-bugs@freefall.cdrom.com
173
174
175Otherwise, for any questions or suggestions, please send mail to:
176
177 FreeBSD-questions@freefall.cdrom.com
178

1805. Acknowledgements
181-------------------
182
183FreeBSD represents the cumulative work of many dozens, if not
184hundreds, of individuals from around the world who have worked very
185hard to bring you this release. It would be very difficult, if not
186impossible, to enumerate everyone who's contributed to FreeBSD, but
187nonetheless we shall try (in alphabetical order, of course). If your
188name is not mentioned, please be assured that its omission is entirely
189accidental.
