grotty - groff driver for typewriter-like devices
S\bSY\bYN\bNO\bOP\bPS\bSI\bIS\bS
g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by [ -\b-h\bhf\bfb\bbu\buo\bod\bdB\bBU\bUv\bv ] [ -\b-F\bF_\bd_\bi_\br ] [ _\bf_\bi_\bl_\be_\bs... ]
D\bDE\bES\bSC\bCR\bRI\bIP\bPT\bTI\bIO\bON\bN
g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by translates the output of GNU t\btr\bro\bof\bff\bf into a form
suitable for typewriter-like devices. Normally g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by
should be invoked by using the g\bgr\bro\bof\bff\bf command with a
-\b-T\bTa\bas\bsc\bci\bii\bi or -\b-T\bTl\bla\bat\bti\bin\bn1\b1 option. If no files are given, g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by
will read the standard input. A filename of -\b- will also
cause g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by to read the standard input. Output is writ-
ten to the standard output.
Normally g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by prints a bold character _\bc using the
sequence `_\bc BACKSPACE _\bc' and an italic character _\bc by the
sequence `_\b_ BACKSPACE _\bc'. These sequences can be dis-
played on a terminal by piping through u\bul\bl(1). Pagers such
as m\bmo\bor\bre\be(1) or l\ble\bes\bss\bs(1) are also able to display these
sequences. Use either -\b-B\bB or -\b-U\bU when piping into l\ble\bes\bss\bs(1);
use -\b-b\bb when piping into m\bmo\bor\bre\be(1). There is no need to fil-
ter the output through c\bco\bol\bl(1) since g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by never outputs
reverse line feeds.
The font description file may contain a command
i\bin\bnt\bte\ber\brn\bna\bal\bln\bna\bam\bme\be _\bn
where _\bn is a decimal integer. If the 01 bit in _\bn is set,
then the font will be treated as an italic font; if the 02
bit is set, then it will be treated as a bold font. The
code field in the font description field gives the code
which will be used to output the character. This code can
also be used in the \\b\N\bN escape sequence in t\btr\bro\bof\bff\bf.
O\bOP\bPT\bTI\bIO\bON\bNS\bS
-\b-F\bF_\bd_\bi_\br Search the directory _\bd_\bi_\br/\b/d\bde\bev\bv_\bn_\ba_\bm_\be for font and
device description files; _\bn_\ba_\bm_\be is the name of the
device, usually a\bas\bsc\bci\bii\bi or l\bla\bat\bti\bin\bn1\b1.
-\b-h\bh Use horizontal tabs in the output. Tabs are
assumed to be set every 8 columns.
-\b-f\bf Use form feeds in the output. A form feed will be
output at the end of each page that has no output
on its last line.
-\b-b\bb Suppress the use of overstriking for bold charac-
ters.
Groff Version 1.08 30 December 1993 1
GROTTY(1) BSD Reference Manual GROTTY(1)
-\b-u\bu Suppress the use of underlining for italic charac-
ters.
-\b-B\bB Use only overstriking for bold-italic characters.
-\b-U\bU Use only underlining for bold-italic characters.
-\b-o\bo Suppress overstriking (other than for bold or
underlined characters).
-\b-d\bd Ignore all \\b\D\bD commands. Without this g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by will
render \\b\D\bD'\b'l\bl.\b..\b..\b.'\b' commands that have at least one
zero argument (and so are either horizontal or ver-
tical) using -\b-, |\b| and +\b+ characters.
-\b-v\bv Print the version number.

g\bgr\bro\bot\btt\bty\by is intended only for simple documents.
There is no support for fractional horizontal or vertical
motions.
There is no support for \\b\D\bD commands other than horizontal
and vertical lines.
Characters above the first line (ie with a vertical posi-
tion of 0) cannot be printed.
