g\bgr\bro\bod\bdv\bvi\bi is a driver for g\bgr\bro\bof\bff\bf that produces TeX dvi format.
Normally it should be run by g\bgr\bro\bof\bff\bf -\b-T\bTd\bdv\bvi\bi. This will run
t\btr\bro\bof\bff\bf -\b-T\bTd\bdv\bvi\bi; it will also input the macros
/\b/u\bus\bsr\br/\b/s\bsh\bha\bar\bre\be/\b/t\btm\bma\bac\bc/\b/t\btm\bma\bac\bc.\b.d\bdv\bvi\bi; if the input is being prepro-
cessed with e\beq\bqn\bn it will also input
/\b/u\bus\bsr\br/\b/s\bsh\bha\bar\bre\be/\b/g\bgr\bro\bof\bff\bf_\b_f\bfo\bon\bnt\bt/\b/d\bde\bev\bvd\bdv\bvi\bi/\b/e\beq\bqn\bnc\bch\bha\bar\br.
The dvi file generated by g\bgr\bro\bod\bdv\bvi\bi can be printed by any
correctly-written dvi driver. The troff drawing primi-
tives are implemented using the tpic version 2 specials.
If the driver does not support these, the \\b\D\bD commands will
not produce any output.
There is an additional drawing command available:
\\b\D\bD'\b'R\bR _\bd_\bh _\bd_\bv'\b'
Draw a rule (solid black rectangle), with one cor-
ner at the current position, and the diagonally
opposite corner at the current position +(_\bd_\bh,_\bd_\bv).
Afterwards the current position will be at the
opposite corner. This produces a rule in the dvi
file and so can be printed even with a driver that
does not support the tpic specials unlike the other
\\b\D\bD commands.
The groff command \\b\X\bX'\b'_\ba_\bn_\by_\bt_\bh_\bi_\bn_\bg'\b' is translated into the same
command in the dvi file as would be produced by \\b\s\bsp\bpe\be-\b-
c\bci\bia\bal\bl{\b{_\ba_\bn_\by_\bt_\bh_\bi_\bn_\bg}\b} in TeX; _\ba_\bn_\by_\bt_\bh_\bi_\bn_\bg _\bm_\ba_\by _\bn_\bo_\bt _\bc_\bo_\bn_\bt_\ba_\bi_\bn _\ba _\bn_\be_\bw_\bl_\bi_\bn_\be_\b.
Font files for g\bgr\bro\bod\bdv\bvi\bi can be created from tfm files using
t\btf\bfm\bmt\bto\bod\bdi\bit\bt(1). The font description file should contain the
following additional commands:
i\bin\bnt\bte\ber\brn\bna\bal\bln\bna\bam\bme\be _\bn_\ba_\bm_\be
The name of the tfm file (without the .\b.t\btf\bfm\bm
extension) is _\bn_\ba_\bm_\be.
c\bch\bhe\bec\bck\bks\bsu\bum\bm _\bn The checksum in the tfm file is _\bn.
d\bde\bes\bsi\big\bgn\bns\bsi\biz\bze\be _\bn The designsize in the tfm file is _\bn.
These are automatically generated by t\btf\bfm\bmt\bto\bod\bdi\bit\bt.\b.
In t\btr\bro\bof\bff\bf the \\b\N\bN escape sequence can be used to access

characters by their position in the corresponding tfm
file; all characters in the tfm file can be accessed this
way.

-\b-d\bd Do not use tpic specials to implement drawing com-
mands. Horizontal and vertical lines will be
implemented by rules. Other drawing commands will
be ignored.
-\b-v\bv Print the version number.
-\b-w\bw_\bn Set the default line thickness to _\bn thousandths of
an em.
-\b-F\bF_\bd_\bi_\br Search directory _\bd_\bi_\br/\b/d\bde\bev\bvd\bdv\bvi\bi for font and device
description files.

B\bBU\bUG\bGS\bS
Dvi files produced by g\bgr\bro\bod\bdv\bvi\bi use a different resolution
(57816 units per inch) to those produced by TeX. Incor-
rectly written drivers which assume the resolution used by
TeX, rather than using the resolution specified in the dvi
file will not work with grodvi.
When using the -\b-d\bd option with boxed tables, vertical and
horizontal lines can sometimes protrude by one pixel.
This is a consequence of the way TeX requires that the
heights and widths of rules be rounded.
